Gau Puja on the eve of Govardhan

As per Hindu legends, Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan to safeguard the people of Mathura. To commemorate this incident and to pay tribute to Lord Krishna, Govardhan Puja is performed on the 4th day of Diwali.

Govardhan is a small hill in Braj which is located near Mathura. To pay a tribute to Lord Krishna’s deed, people build small hills of cow dung, decorate it with flowers and then worship it. Annakoot is also celebrated on this day. Annakoot means a mountain of food. People stay awake the whole night and cook a Chachappan Bhog or 56 dishes or 108 types of food as a Bhog offering to Lord Krishna.

On this auspicious day, Gau puja is also performed. In Hinduism, cow is a sacred animal and every part of a cow’s body holds religious significance. A cow symbolizes fertility, purity and sacrifice. It is also denotes motherly nature, nurturing human sustenance. In fact, a various cow’s body parts embody a Hindu deity.

Kamadhenu is a divine cow and appeared during the Samudra Manthan. Due its appearance, sage Vashistha asked everyone to observe a Gau Puja and this became a tradition since then. Performing Gau Puja helps fulfill desires, helps alleviate the sins of our ancestors, helps to nullify pitru dosh etc.
